Police hampered by wall of silence

18/06/2008 10:47:00 AM
A WALL of silence in Bonny Hills is hampering police investigations into the bashing of a Central Coast tourist earlier this year.

The Central Coast man was left unable to work due to the serious injuries he suffered during the “unprovoked attack” on February 29.

Police believe members of the Bonny Hills community know those responsible for the attack but no one will provide the information to investigators.

Senior Constable Steve Cherry said investigators have been met by a wall of silence from the community. He said police had gathered a “fair amount” of information but needed someone to provide a statement.

Snr Const. Cherry said anyone who provided information about the incident would be assured confidentiality.

He believed some people fear retribution or just do not want to become involved.

The 22-year-old tourist wrote to Port Macquarie MP Rob Oakeshott following the attack. He believes he was targeted because he was not a local.

Police believe 10 people surrounded the man as his three friends near the intersection of Rodley Street and Ocean Drive as they walked to a holiday house shortly after 10.30pm.

The tourist and one of his friends were attacked. The 22-year-old man required surgery on a broken leg sustained in the bashing.

Mr Oakeshott encouraged anyone with information to speak out urged those directly responsible to go to police direct.

Anyone with information should contact Port Macquarie detectives on 65830142 or crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
