$1.8 million wanted for surf club renovation

Plans for Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club are being pushed, despite a rejection from the Regional Partnerships Program.

The Club had previously applied for a $500,000 grant to demolish the clubhouse and build the bottom storey of a new building, but those plans were shattered when the new Labor Government disapproved their proposal.

Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club president Richard McGovern said members remained disappointed at the funding let down.

“The thing that disappointed me the most was when the government knew they weren’t going to continue with the program, they allowed the regional committees to access the applications,” he said.

Despite the refusal of their application the club remains confident that a new clubhouse will be built.

The plan includes two stages: a top level featuring a restaurant, care taker’s unit and a function hall, and a bottom level with a first aid room and storage areas for the club’s surf lifesaving equipment.

Lyne MP Mark Vaile’s office is currently investigating other funding sources for the proposed $1.8 million development.
