Girl surfrider championships

2/07/2008 11:10:00 AM
Mid North Coast Girl Surfriders staged their winter championships in wintry and wet conditions at Rainbow Beach Bonny Hills on Sunday June 8.

40 of the club’s bravest and dedicated members arrived at the beach to find a 2 to 3 ft swell, building to 5ft to 6ft as the day progressed. The icy Sou/Wester was blowing the tops off making conditions rather tricky for some.

The contest format for the winter championships was a knockout so an early start was necessary. The advanced short board hotly contested by Kate Sanders and Rebecca Astorini was exciting to watch as they were like corks bobbing in the ocean out the back, disappearing behind each set.

The courageous (crazy) Liz Murray on her 9ft long board also made it out the back and was able to show us her experience on big waves. As for the remainer, there was plenty of fun to be had in the white wash. (More like a washing machine.) With the trying conditions, the club insists that members must only surf where it is safe and conditions are suited to their ability.

A total of 18 beginner girls fought it out in 3 heats, with the 2 highest placed in each heat progressing to a final. After the completion of all heats we moved swiftly into our presentation. All 1st place competitors of each event and the 6 finalists in the beginner girls received a very impressive locally made, hand carved wooden surf board as a trophy. Congratulations to Gaby Scullin the recipient for our encouragement award.
