Junior league thriller at Port

2/07/2008 11:11:00 AM
ONE of the most exciting and entertaining games of the year was seen on Saturday in the under 16’s Group 3 Junior League between top of the table Port Breakers and the vastly improved Camden Haven team.

The Laurieton United Servicemens Club sponsored Junior Eagles stood tall and showed they are a force to be reckoned with, recording a dogged 12 all draw with the Breakers. The game was hard and fast with both teams out on their feet at the final whistle. The score was nil all at half time with the young Eagles squandering many opportunities in the first half and were definitely the better team.

Just after half time Breakers scored immediately and scored again in the 17th minute and looked to have the game in the bag. With only minutes to go a wide ball out to Mitch Turner saw him show his class, cutting the breakers apart and scoring in the corner. Blue Ashburn converted from the sideline.

With a minute remaining the ball was kicked off and the young Eagles worked the ball to the half way line and went wide to Brad Willis who beat several defenders, running 50 metres to score in the corner. As the full time hooter went, Blue Ashburn took his time and converted from the sideline.

It was another good day for the young Eagles with excellent wins to the 12’s, 24-4 against Lake Cathie, the undefeated 13’s, 44-4 against Port Breakers and the 14’s, 56-0. Both of these teams at the top of the ladder in their age groups.

Under 6’s through the Under 14’s will be played at home this weekend commencing at 9am with some great games, including a grand final rematch between Camden Haven and Wingham in the Under 14’s. Get down to the game and be entertained by our talented sport people.

KIDS TO KANGAROO CAMP

On Thursday July 10, Kylie Hilda development officer for the ARL, will be running a Kids to Kangaroo Camp at Laurieton oval. The camp is a great opportunity for young sports people to become involved with Junior Rugby League being played from ages under 6’s to 16’s. The camp is open to ages four and above.

With the performances of the Junior Eagles this year and becoming involved in a team sport, it is a great time to learn. If you are interested and wish to know more contact Luke Mitchell on 6559 4267 or 0438 714 220.
